SO3 is a colorless to white crystalline, liquid or gas. Its melting point is 16.9 ̊C (62.42 ̊F), boiling point 44.9 ̊C (112.82 ̊F), density 1.92 g/cm3. SO3 is toxic. SO3 can be used as a preservative and detergent. It reacts vigorously with water to produce sulfuric acid H2SO4.
Example Reactions:
• SO3 + H2O = H2SO4
• Cu2S + 2O2 = Cu2O + SO3
• CaSO4 = CaO + SO3
• S + 6HNO3 = SO3 + 3H2O + 6NO2
• Ca(OH)2 + SO3 = CaSO4 + H2O
• SO2 + CO2 = SO3 + CO
• 2FeSO4 = Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3
• C2H6S + 5O2 = 2CO2 + 3H2O + SO3
• SO2 + NO2 = SO3 + NO
• BaO + SO3 = BaSO4
