PCl3 is a colorless to yellow fuming liquid. Its melting point is -93.6 ̊C (-136.48 ̊F), boiling point 76.1 ̊C (168.98 ̊F), density 1.574 g/cm3. PCl3 is very toxic and corrosive. Reacts with water vigorously to produce H3PO3 and HCl.

Example Reactions:
• PCl3 + Cl2 = PCl5
• 3H2O + PCl3 = H3PO3 + 3HCl
• PH3 + 3Cl2 = PCl3 + 3HCl
• PCl3 + 3HF = PF3 + 3HCl
• 3HC2H3O2 + PCl3 = 3C2H3OCl + H3PO3
• PCl3 + 3C2H5OH = 3C2H5Cl + H3PO3
• PCl3 + H2O = POCl + 2HCl
• 3CH3CH2OH + PCl3 = 3CH3CH2Cl + H3PO3
• PCl3 + 3C2H6O = 3C2H5Cl + H3PO3
• PCl3 + 3AgF = PF3 + 3AgCl
