(NH4)2S is a colorless to yellow liquid, with irritating ammonia odor. Its boiling point is 40 ̊C (104 ̊F), density 0.99 g/cm3. (NH4)2S is toxic, corrosive and flammable. (NH4)2S reacts with water or acid will produce toxic and flammable hydrogen sulfide gas, reacts with bases will release ammonia gas.

Example Reactions:
• 2NH3 + H2S = (NH4)2S
• ZnCl2 + (NH4)2S = ZnS + 2NH4Cl
• (NH4)2S + Pb(NO3)2 = 2NH4NO3 + PbS
• Cu(NO3)2 + (NH4)2S = CuS + 2NH4NO3
• FeCl2 + (NH4)2S = FeS + 2NH4Cl
• CuSO4 + (NH4)2S = CuS + (NH4)2SO4
• CoCl2 + (NH4)2S = 2NH4Cl + CoS
• Sr(OH)2 + (NH4)2S = SrS + 2NH4OH
• CuCl2 + (NH4)2S = CuS + 2NH4Cl
• CdCl2 + (NH4)2S = CdS + 2NH4Cl
