AlCl3 is a white or gray powder with pungent odor. Its melting point is 193.9 ̊C (381.02 ̊F), density 2.48 g/cm3. AlCl3 is toxic, corrosive. AlCl3 reacts vigorously with water, the products are Al(OH)3 and hydrogen chloride gas.

Example Reactions:
• Al(OH)3 + 3HCl = AlCl3 + 3H2O
• 3AgNO3 + AlCl3 = 3AgCl + Al(NO3)3
• AlCl3 + 3NH4OH = 3NH4Cl + Al(OH)3
• AlCl3 + 3NaOH = Al(OH)3 + 3NaCl
• Al + BiCl3 = AlCl3 + Bi
• 3Al + 3NH4ClO4 = Al2O3 + AlCl3 + 3NO + 6H2O
• 3HfCl3 + Al = 3HfCl2 + AlCl3
• 3Li + AlCl3 = 3LiCl + Al
• AlCl3 + Na3PO4 = AlPO4 + 3NaCl
• AlCl3 + K3PO4 = 3KCl + AlPO4
