SiCl4 is a colorless liquid with fuming odor. SiCl4 is unstable, and will decompose by water to hydrochloric acid. It can be used to prepare high purity silicon and silica for semiconductor industry.
Example Reactions:
• Si + 2Cl2 = SiCl4
• SiCl4 + 4H2O = H4SiO4 + 4HCl
• SiC + 2Cl2 = SiCl4 + C
• Ca2Si + 4Cl2 = 2CaCl2 + SiCl4
• SiO2 + 4HCl = SiCl4 + 2H2O
• SiCl4 + 2Mg = 2MgCl2 + Si
• SiCl4 + 2H2 = Si + 4HCl
• SiCl4 + 4H2O = Si(OH)4 + 4HCl
• SiH4 + 4Cl2 = SiCl4 + 4HCl
• SiCl4 + 4H2 = SiH4 + 4HCl
